Create a Family Summer Bucket List and Make the Most of Your Summer

Summer for our family officially began 5 days ago at noon on Friday, May 20th. With no snow days to make up this year we have one of the longest summers I can remember. A total of 84 lazy summer days will give our family plenty of time to enjoy a break from hectic schedules, homework, sports practices, and early morning arguments about why you must get out of bed NOW or else.

As a side note, my kids still don’t understand why they don’t get 104 days of summer vacation. We obviously still watch way too much Phineas & Ferb from the DVR here in our house.

My nine-year-old daughter came home last week with a Summer Bucket List and literally has talked non-stop about how she plans to accomplish each and every one of the items on her list.

Summer Bucket List

Everyone needs a summer bucket list!

She even has a Summer Notebook to record the details of her Summer Bucket List accomplishments. Personally, I think naming a starfish Billy is the best feat of all. We haven’t quite figured out all of the details of this one yet. I think a trip to Chicago to visit the starfish at the Shedd Aquarium is in order, and preferable to actually catching a starfish at the beach. I am reinforcing strongly the idea that starfish are not pets, and we definitely cannot bring one home with us from our Hilton Head, S.C., vacation this summer.

Best of all her Summer Bucket List got me thinking – what we really need is a Family Summer Bucket List. As a family with a teen, tween and 9-year-old, we spend a lot of time running here, there and everywhere as time flies by faster than you can blink an eye. Days, weeks and months go by before we even realize it.

So this summer we’re going to create a Summer Bucket List and try our best to keep to it. As my kids get older I realize the idea of a “summer break’ is growing closer to slipping away. Not too soon thankfully, but one day we no longer will be asking ourselves “ok, so what do we want to do together all summer?” Instead there will be summer jobs, then maybe summer internships, and then eventually real life. While we have the opportunity to answer that question and act on it, I want to make the most of the summer as possible.

This is our Family Summer Bucket List:

Follow along this summer as I post updates on our progress crossing off items from this list. And find out whether the nine-year-old ever gets a chance to name a starfish Billy.

I would love to hear about your family’s summer bucket list also. What’s on your list?
